NYU Paris is seeking a part-time lecturer in Sociology or History to teach in the Summer Graduate Program of the Institute of French Studies (IFS) at New York University. The instructor must be able to teach in French. Teaching takes place in Paris, from May 27 to July 5; classes meet for 2.5 hours twice a week; the instructor will also hold at least 2 office hours, weekly. History and Sociology of Immigration in Paris: Global trends, local experiences This course is offered to Institute of French Studies M.A. and Ph.D. students. It introduces students to the history and sociology of immigration in Paris. It will provide students with a background in the history of immigration to Paris since the 19th century, and will explore the legacy of that history on modern-day Paris: neighborhoods of immigration, memory and memorialization, institutions and policies shaping immigration. The course will also focus on present-day immigrants in Paris and will examine the experiences and cultural practices of various groups from diverse class and ethnic backgrounds, from privileged, Western/European migrants to poor, racialized communities. The course will finally look at the interaction of state institutions in charge of handling migration with immigrants and their advocates. Paris and its region will be used as a resource and case-study, and the course will include visits and meetings with local actors. Il introduit les tudiants l'histoire et la sociologie de l'immigration Paris. Il fournira aux tudiants un aperu de l'histoire de l'immigration Paris depuis le 19me sicle, et explorera l'hritage de cette histoire sur le Paris d'aujourd'hui : les quartiers d'immigration, la mmoire et la commmoration, les institutions et les politiques d'immigration. Le cours se concentrera galement sur les immigrants d'aujourd'hui Paris et examinera les expriences et les pratiques culturelles de divers groupes de classes et d'origines ethniques diffrentes, des migrants privilgis d'Europe occidentale aux communauts pauvres et racises. Le cours se penchera enfin sur l'interaction des institutions publiques charges de grer les migrations avec les immigrants et leurs dfenseurs. Paris et sa rgion seront utiliss comme ressource et tude de cas, et le cours comprendra des visites et des rencontres avec les acteurs locaux.
