Department MEDICAL & MOLECULAR GENETICS (IN-MMGE-IUINA) Department Information Founded as a department in 1966, the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics (MMGE) is one of the first human genetics departments in the country. Currently ranked 6th nationally for Genetics Departments in NIH funding by Blue Ridge Medical Institute, the Department is unique in its standing as the only department within Indiana University School of Medicine that is both a basic science and a clinical department. In addition to its patient care and breadth of research that spans basic science, translational, computational, and clinical trial research, Medical and Molecular Genetics is notable for its clinical genetic testing laboratories, GMP cell and gene therapy facility, and biobanking expertise. Job Summary The Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics is hiring a Communications Generalist position for improving internal and external communication about our research, clinical, and educational missions. This position will strengthen vitality and engagement and will encourage connection within the department and facilitate collaborations with external contacts. General Responsibilities Independently creates basic and complex communications for print and e-distribution on behalf of department or functional area within department and in support of departmental goals and objectives; communications may be interdepartmental; staff, faculty, or student-focused; or external. Responds to inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications. Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and creates communications coverage for relevant initiatives, events, and programs. Prepares communications timelines and shares progress of communications toward relevant deadlines with manager, team members, and other relevant constituents. Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty. Utilizes various communications software programs and delivers communications in multiple formats to a variety of audiences. May provide guidance to lower-level Communications Generalists. Qualifications Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education. EDUCATION Required Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field. WORK EXPERIENCE Required 2 years in relevant field. SKILLS Required Proficient communication skills. Maintains a high degree of professionalism. Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills. Demonstrates a high commitment to quality. Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment. Seeks to acquire knowledge in area of specialty. Highly thorough and dependable. Demonstrates a high level of accuracy, even under pressure. Working Conditions / Demands This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation. Work Location Indianapolis, Indiana This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs. Advertised Salary $55,000.08 - $65,000.04 per year based on experience and internal equity within the department.
