Position Overview

The Dual Language and Immersion Licensure program in the Multiple Pathways to Teaching (MPT) office, College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) has openings for temporary, non-tenured, Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) positions, paid on a per course basis, and appointed as Teaching Specialist/Lecturer. These appointments are typically arranged semester by semester or summer and employment is contingent upon the course meeting its enrollment target.

Applications are reviewed as openings occur, and individual applicants are invited to interview when their skills or areas of expertise match an opening. This posting is designed to establish a pool of instructors. Applications will not be acknowledged, but will be reviewed when such openings occur throughout the academic year.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching graduate level courses for students pursuing initial licensure. The syllabi have already been developed and we require that instructors use these as they are part of an overall program design. We utilize the Canvas course management system, and we have a template designed for use for all courses. Instructors develop and maintain the course Canvas site.

Teaching (90%)

  • Teach credit-bearing, graduate courses on course topics related to licensure specific area and foundations of education
  • Attend class meetings, teach, and deliver course content both in face-to-face and online course sessions
  • Evaluate student performance
  • Grade student materials, including exams, papers, and final projects
  • Provide substantive feedback to students throughout the course
  • Respond to student course inquires, questions, and concerns in a timely manner
  • Submit grades

Course Preparation (10%):
  • Complete required program instructor orientation modules on Canvas
  • Meet with the program coordinator and director prior to beginning the course
  • Prepare course materials; update syllabus in Canvas with dates, assignments, assessments, and required texts


Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications (non-Methods Instructor)
  • Master's degree or higher in related field of study
  • 18 graduate credits or dissertation/published research in position's area of instruction
  • Held/Hold teaching license

Required Qualifications (Methods Instructor)
  • Master's degree or higher in related field of study
  • 18 graduate credits aligned to the content area of instruction OR dissertation/published research in position's area of instruction OR completed state-approved teacher preparation program aligned to the position's content area of instruction
  • Three or more years of experience as a teacher of record, including at least one year aligned to the scope and content area of the position's area of instruction

Required Qualifications for (Reading Methods specifically)
  • Specialized knowledge in the research and teaching of reading (e.g., graduate coursework in reading foundations and pedagogy)
  • 3 years (including at least one year in reading) of teaching experience working with developing readers and, for the middle and secondary preparation courses, teaching reading in the content areas.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in dual language, immersion, or bilingual education
  • Experience in equity-based pedagogy and advocacy
  • Earned Ph.D. in an education field
  • Experience in online course management systems (e.g. Canvas)
  • Demonstrated leadership in education
  • Evidence of being able to work within a team
  • Evidence of organizational ability, including the ability to coordinate multiple tasks
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with or interest in alternative routes to licensure
  • Teaching experience in higher education
  • Evidence of the capacity to be a problem solver

*Employees with an M.A. will be hired as a Teaching Specialist. Employees with a Ph.D. will be hired as a lecturer
