Postgraduate Associate Reinke Lab | Yale University - Military Veterans

at HERC - Metro New York & Southern Connecticut

The Reinke lab in the department of Genetics at Yale School of Medicine seeks a highly motivated postgraduate researcher to embark on research focused on epigenetic regulatory mechanisms in C. elegans germ cells. During development, germ cells employ complex modes of gene regulation, including the interplay between chromatin state and small RNAs, to ultimately produce mature gametes that have the remarkable ability to kickstart the life of a whole new organism. The project will give the postgraduate an opportunity to learn cutting-edge genomic, genetic, and computational approaches designed to understand gene expression dynamics across time, space, and generations. The Reinke lab consists of a small group of experienced individuals who truly value the opportunity to train and mentor others. We also place equity and fairness at the highest level of importance. More broadly, the postgraduate researcher will be able to take advantage of the vibrant scientific environment of the Department of Genetics. The Department of Genetics believes that outstanding science is driven bydiversity. We strive to create an inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students whose voices and contributions are valued and respected, and who better represent the communities we serve. We are dedicated to providing an inclusive workplace that promotes and valuesdiversityin age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, physical ability, and ethnicity.Diversityis our commitment and our passion; we invite you to be part of it. Training The postgraduate researcher can expect to gain experimental skills in microscopy, genetic techniques such as CRISPR-mediated gene editing, and genomic assays that measure chromatin state and define regulatory interactions, including ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, and RNA-seq. They will also have the opportunity to develop computational expertise to analyze these data. The project can be tailored depending on the specific interests and skills of the candidate. The postgrad can also expect to have weekly individual meetings with Valerie and participate in regular lab meetings. There are many departmental seminar series the candidate can attend and present their work as well. Mentoring The Reinke lab has a long history of successful mentoring of trainees, resulting in strong publication records and continuation in various scientific fields upon moving to the next phase of their career. Mentoring of a postgraduate researcher will include regular meetings with the PI to discuss the project, the relevant scientific background and career goals. Within the lab, detailed oversight and guidance with respect to learning techniques will be provided, with the expectation that the candidate will gain independence and autonomy. Education Bachelor's degree or master's degree in biological sciences is required. Prior experience in molecular biology is strongly desired; any hands-on experience with C. elegans or familiarity with programming is considered a plus. Qualifications The candidate should display a high level of personal initiative and be able to organize their time effectively to tackle both short- and long-term goals. The candidate should be able to work responsibly with others, and have excellent listening skills as well as strong communication skills, both verbally and written, with the ability to keep accurate and informative lab notebooks and create and deliver in-person presentations. Please use Interfolio to upload a CV and a cover letter stating your motivation for pursuing the opportunity, your research interests and experience, and your formal qualifications. Your CV should include the contact information of 2-3 referees familiar with your experience and interests. The appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of extension.
