Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate full-time opportunity for a Process Engineer, located at the Croswell Factory.

Job Summary:

The Process Engineer is responsible evaluating existing processes and configuring systems to maximize recovery of sugar while reducing cost, improving sustainability, and developing best practices within operations. This includes process design, operation and implementation of projects spanning one to five years assuring project accuracy and quality.

The Process Engineer works with the engineering department and factory personnel to determine equipment requirements for process and coordinate purchase and installation. This includes defining scope, budgets, P&ID's, drawings, specifications and bid packages. Local travel is required to all factories located up two hours away. The Process Engineer works with factory personnel to assess processes, measure and interpret data, perform process simulations, risk assessments, provide process documentation and operating instructions.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical assistance, review KPI data & determine methods to improve process operations.
  • Provide training, start-up & handoff support to factory personnel for operations and asset management.
  • Investigate & troubleshoot problems that arise with processes, procedures and operations.
  • Evaluate project equipment, building & infrastructure needs, develop project budgets, schedules and P&ID's.
  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate and monitor assigned engineering projects.
  • Review engineering deliverables (budget, schedule, planning) and report regularly on project status.
  • Develop structural, mechanical, electrical & instrumentation layouts with internal & external disciplines.
  • Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications.
  • Coordinate with support groups for environmental, safety, power and controls services for projects.

Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • Completion of Michigan Sugar Company's management trainee program or 3-5 years' experience in related field.
  • Proven work experience as a Process Engineer preferred.
  • Process modeling (Aspen, MATLAB) and AutoCAD drafting experience.
  • Strong technical experience and working knowledge of ASME boiler, pressure vessel and piping codes.
  • Experience specifying process equipment such as piping systems, pumps, heat exchangers, evaporators, centrifuges, chillers, tanks, filters, air compressors, water treatment systems, boilers, turbines and equipment unique to the sugar industry.
  • Experience specifying bulk material handling equipment such as belt &screw conveyors, bucket elevators, mixers, screeners, bins, scales, packaging equipment, and explosion protection equipment.
