Job Summary
The Department of Pathobiology at the College of Veterinary Medicine is hiring a Research Assistant I, II III, who will work in one of our Virology Research Laboratories and will be involved in several extramurally funded projects investigating the prevalence, pathogenesis and evolution of animal and zoonotic viruses.
The Research Assistant hired will assist researchers in planning, maintaining or completing research programs and/or projects involved in the discovery of new knowledge, techniques, and concepts which require fundamental scientific/research knowledge, skills and abilities following relevant policies, procedures, regulations and laws.

Essential Functions
- Assists in the development of project proposals, plans and protocols.
- Conducts routine or fundamental experiments, investigations and/or studies related to programs and projects in pursuit of new knowledge, techniques and concepts. These will include: basic molecular biology tests and experiments, such as qRT-PCR, PCR, transformations, DNA, RNA extractions and cloning, next generation sequencing, cellular and immunologic assays according to standard operating procedures.
- Assists with logistical considerations to include equipment, materials, and labor needs.
- Collects data/samples related to others' research and in routine cases.
- Records, compiles, processes and analyzes data/samples.
- Documents results and observations in writing as well as presenting results to others.
- May assist in the preparation of research results for publication or presentation at conferences to include assisting in literature reviews and assisting in the writing of results and discussions.
- May instruct students and/or supervise others' research in area of expertise.

Focus of Education: Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Virology or a related science field.
Level I: Bachelor's degree in discipline appropriate to position and no experience.
Level II: Bachelor's degree in discipline appropriate to position and 2 years experience.
Level III: Bachelor's degree in discipline appropriate to position and 4 years experience, including at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.

Auburn University was established in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, 20 years after the city of Auburn's founding. In 1872, under the Morrill Act, the school became the first land-grant college in the South and was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1899 the name again was changed, to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Finally, in 1960 the name of the school was changed to Auburn University, a title more in keeping with its location, and expressing the varied academic programs and larger curriculum of a major university.
