Senior Process Engineer - Solvay, NY

$92,000 - $137,900

The above range represents the expected base salary for this position. The actual salary may vary based upon several factors including, but not limited to relevant skills and experience, credentials for the position, time in an applicable role, and geographic location.

The opportunity:

The role for this position is to provide support to the operations, technical, maintenance, and engineering departments to facilitate optimization and continuous improvement in throughput, uptime, and cost control. This position is very dynamic and project-driven, and the team member must be able to handle multiple projects at a time, with a minimum of three projects per year. The Senior Process Engineer will be heavily involved with the facility's lean six-sigma process and must have a strong desire for career growth in the organization as this position is a normal step in the progression into the operations area of the business.

How you will impact WestRock:

  • Responsible to mill operations for technical support in optimizing mill process in a manner that maximizes production at the lowest unit cost.
  • Will assume leadership of development, execution, troubleshooting and reporting of trials in support of the above.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned such as supporting operations activities on outage days, backfilling assistant superintendents during vacations/travel.

What you need to succeed:
  • BS degree in a science or technical field
  • Minimum five years' experience in the pulp and paper industry
  • Strong aptitude for problem-solving and the ability to identify the root cause of difficult problems using data and root cause analysis.
  • Ability to perform basic unit conversions.
  • Strong computer competency.
  • Aptitude to analyze and interpret complex data to troubleshoot problems.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for efficiency improvement projects.
  • Skillset for reading and interpreting basic process and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID's).
  • Understanding of the basics of papermaking and stock preparation processes.
  • Ability to utilize statistical tools to solve production problems.
  • Aptitude to identify and provide basic design criteria and scope for new or replacement process equipment.
  • 5-10 years of paper industry experience with paper machines and process optimization.
  • Understanding of ISO 9000 process and basics of quality management.
  • Understands the basics of chemistry.
  • Basic understanding of TAPPI test procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of process control and technology.
  • Basic knowledge of hydraulics/pumps and the ability to read pump curves.
  • Ability to gather information and construct basic process mass/flow balances.
  • Experience utilizing Pi or equivalent data historian to gather data and monitor processes.
