POSITION SUMMARY
The Hansen lab is inviting applications for a Research Associate . With the help of scientists, the RA carries out specialized laboratory procedures for research projects at the Buck Institute. The focus of our research is to understand how the basic cellular recycling process called autophagy is regulated during aging, using the nematode C. elegans and mammalian cell culture systems and a combination of biochemical, imaging, and genetic approaches. Work schedule flexibility may be needed.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare reagents including production of agar plates, bacterial culturing and C. elegans culturing and maintenance.
Enter and manage data.
Participate in project planning meetings and other communication exercises.
Use various established research protocols/techniques to investigate a scientific problem.
Maintain laboratory facilities and equipment.
Help maintain laboratory records (e.g., chemical safety, radiation safety, etc).
Assist in the preparation of protocols.
Carefully record experiments in laboratory notebooks.
Analyze and interpret experimental results.
Assist in preparing research reports.
Help to develop new laboratory procedures.
Read assigned research articles.
May make oral presentations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
BA/BS in Biology, Cell Biology or a related field
Knowledge and practical experience working on elegans required
Specialized Skills
Strong aptitude, background and knowledge of basic scientific theory
Strong motivation to perform research
Excellent technical and problem-solving ability
Precise attention to detail and accuracy
Works well both with other scientists under general supervision as well as independently
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
Full training in specialized aspects of the work will be given
Database management and computation experience is a plus
Salary: $50,000 - $65,000 commensurate with lab/research experience
