Once registered, Patricia will email applicants a link to online practice exams. Testing is held on 4 different days/times and seating is limited. Assessments must be completed and scores on file with WorkOne by the end of the job closing date August 14, 2023. Note: If you have completed your WorkKeys contact Patricia Goss so that she can supply IU with your test scores and go to Step 4 Submit. This assessment establishes a WorkKeys profile of an individual's skill set. Job Summary The Indiana University Apprenticeship Program (IUAP), Bloomington Campus, is accepting applications for 3 Apprentice Elevator Mechanics. The selected candidates will engage in a comprehensive, intensive 4-year apprenticeship training program within the Facility Operations department that will consist of a total of 8000 hours of on-the-job training and 576 hours of related classroom training (2000 hours of on-the-job training and 144 hours of classroom instruction annually). Classroom sessions occur onsite and are taught by our journey-level elevator mechanics. They generally occur on Thursday evenings each week and are not compensated. General Responsibilities Maintains and repairs elevators, escalators, chairlifts, conveyors. and machine rooms/pits. Inspects wiring connection, control panel hookups, door installation, and alignment and clearance of car hoist-way. Operates elevator to determine power demand and tests power consumption to detect overload factors. Reads schematics and troubleshoots elevator malfunctions. May perform acceptance and routine inspections, witness tests, and report results of the inspection and testing. Orders parts through supervisor. Repairs and replaces worn/damaged components as needed. Cleans, repairs, or replaces controller components as needed. Cleans machine room and elevator pits. Removes passengers from stuck elevators. Performs work under the guidance of a journey level elevator mechanic Completes assigned apprentice coursework Performs other general building maintenance as needed. Drives vehicle. Qualifications EDUCATION Required High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES Preferred Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University. SKILLS Required Strong verbal communication and listening skills Proficient communication skills Maintains a high degree of professionalism Demonstrates time management and priority setting skills Demonstrates a high commitment to quality Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment Seeks to acquire knowledge in area of specialty Highly thorough and dependable Demonstrates a high level of accuracy, even under pressure Excellent organizational skills Ability to represent the company with external constituents Ability to drive multiple projects to successful completion Strong verbal communication and listening skills Ability to build strong customer relationships Ability to successfully complete required training programs Ability to learn how to safely use relevant hand and power tools associated with the trade Equipment utilized: Use of computers, meters, stationary equipment and basic hand tools and specialized equipment Ability to read blueprints and schematics Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner Ability to use a computer May be required to obtain and maintain a Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) license May be required to acquire and maintain OSHA required certifications Excellent oral and written communication skills Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in installation, maintenance, and repair of elevator systems and equipment Ability to perform troubleshooting, installation, and inspection Ability to work with wide variety of cultures and backgrounds Preferred Ability to learn how to safely use relevant hand and power tools associated with the trade and the ability to troubleshoot and read schematics Working Conditions / Demands This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation. Must work in a safe and efficient manner and be able to operate a computer. Standby and callout on an as-needed basis.
