Position Title: Digital Publishing and Repository Librarian Reports To: Head of Research Services Position Type: Full-time Librarian Faculty Northwestern University Libraries seek a Digital Publishing and Repository Librarian committed to open scholarship and providing innovative services to faculty and students for creating and publishing original educational and scholarly materials. This role is integral to the Libraries collaboration across campus and the wider academic community in the planning, execution, and assessment of a variety of digital publishing ventures. Digital publishing services include project management, production, metadata, design, hosting, and archiving for digital publications, including Open Educational Resources (OER), Open Access (OA) journals, and OA monographs in collaboration with Northwestern faculty, students, and other scholars and campus partners. Current digital publishing projects include the peer-reviewed journal Bulletin of Applied Transgender Studies , monographs and websites for Northwestern University's Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, and OER created through the Affordable Instructional Resources (AIR) Faculty Grant Program. As the service manager for Arch, Northwesterns institutional repository the Digital Publishing and Repository Librarian promotes faculty deposits to Arch and collaborates with other library departments to report user feedback to improve overall experiences. The Digital Publishing and Repository Librarian keeps abreast of trends and best practices in library-based publishing, especially in relation to OA, OER, open science, digital humanities, and new methods of publishing in digital formats. This role also actively participates in planning and implementing new initiatives that transform digital scholarship within the Libraries, across the University, and throughout the scholarly publishing domain. Key Responsibilities: Manage digital publishing technologies for production, design, metadata, hosting, and archiving of HTML and PDF editions of original digital publications Provide project management assistance to faculty and student collaborators for digital publishing projects Develop and promote workflows for faculty and students to deposit scholarly materials to the Arch institutional repository Serve as point-of-contact for assistance with using the institutional repository and monitor day-to-day operations Collaborate closely with the Open Education Librarian to provide consultation, training, and support to faculty, instructors, and other librarians on activities related to publishing open course materials and OER outreach Work with metadata specialists to provide quality control for deposits and ensure metadata complies with applicable policies and standards Assist the Libraries efforts to promote OER, OA, open science, and digital humanities in collaboration with others in Research Services, other library departments and committees, and other campus units. Forge and maintain partnerships with other campus units, such as the Affordable Instructional Resources initiative, the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, and other departments and groups seeking digital publishing assistance Engage faculty and students with presentations, workshops, and other activities relevant to their interests and expressed needs for digital publishing services, such as determining the right solutions for publication and preservation of their work Advocate for policies to support open access to scholarship created at the university Depending on background and service needs, may serve as a liaison to one or more academic or other university constituencies Contribute actively to the re-envisioning of digital scholarship and library services by pursuing ongoing innovation and embracing new and evolving responsibilities in dynamic digital research environment Minimum Qualifications: Master of Library Science or other relevant graduate degree Understanding of current issues, trends, and technologies in scholarly communication, academic digital publishing, and single-source publishing Demonstrated experience with HTML, CSS, and Web Standards Knowledge of markup languages such as Markdown and XML, and converters such as Pandoc Demonstrated experience with, or interest and aptitude for learning, Python, Javascript, or other programming languages Demonstrated experience with static site generators such as Hugo and Quire Demonstrated experience with GitHub for managing code and deployment Experience with one or more of the following areas: digital scholarship, data science, informatics, and/or other computational approaches to research and scholarship Minimum Competencies: Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility Ability to work in a collaborative team-based environment Excellent oral and written communication skills Adaptable, ability to adjust to changing environment Takes ownership of work, completes what is needed without being asked, follows through Plans ahead, manages time well, is resource-conscious, finds better ways to achieve personal and workgroup goals To Apply: Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, and the names of three references.
