Position Description We offer a unique opportunity to join a group focused on the neurobiology of aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. This individual will be joining a group with a collaborative team atmosphere offering expertise in molecular biology, cell biology, and mouse genetics. The position will entail both research technician responsibilities and lab administrative responsibilities. The research duties include hands-on activities at the bench, with some time spent working with Excel spreadsheets and DNA sequence data. Specific duties will include PCR genotyping (including in 96-well format); gel electrophoresis; sub-cloning using standard approaches; transformation of DNA intobacterial cells; preparation of plasmid DNA for sub-cloning, sequencing, and other uses (minipreps or maxipreps), and sequence analysis using standard software tools. Additional tasks might include maintenance of mousecolonies and cell culture. The Staff Assistant responsibilities will be primarily in support of the lab Principal Investigator and include coordinating with the Department/School/University administrative offices, gathering and maintaining administrative data, and assisting in preparation of research permissions using a variety of computer software applications. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to compose, proofread, edit, and prepare correspondence, reports, and other materials using word processing, spreadsheets, and/or databases. Will purchase all laboratory materials and supplies, collect and distribute all laboratory mail, assist in the payment and processing of all invoices, facilitate weekly laboratory meetings, and assist with general filing and copying duties for the Principle Investigator and other lab members. Contributes to laboratory goals by accomplishing additional duties as required. Basic Qualifications College background and one or more years of lab experience are required. Education beyond high school may count toward experience. Additional Qualifications and Skills BA/BS preferred. Experience in basic lab techniques is required. Must be able to prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, and follow through independently. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential in order to represent the department in a pleasant, diplomatic, and positive manner. Ability to handle sensitive, complex, and confidential information. Experience supporting faculty and staff within a fast-paced research office setting. Competency using a variety of computer software and internet applications including Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel), Endnote, and internet research search engines (ex. Pubmed). Experience with Harvard University Financial systems is helpful. Prior experience working within academic environments is helpful. Additional Information Please also note this is a part-time, 25 hours (.71 FTE) per week position. This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position. Offer contingent upon successful completion of a pre-placement medical evaluation. This is an in-person position based on our campus in Boston.
