You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop and transition new production processes and methods to production, lead continuous improvement efforts, evaluate backfill process data, develop and implement detailed operating procedures for various assembly processes, and support manufacturing in the PF-4 (a hazard category 2 defense nuclear facility used for plutonium pit and radioisotope power source manufacturing, stockpile assessments, plutonium pit dismantlement and oxide production, and actinide research and development) and PF-5 Warehouse facilities. You are expected to be well versed in mechanical systems, vacuum systems and conduct of operations at TA-55, the principal Department of Energy (DOE) facility for plutonium research and weapons development. Development and production activities require working in a team environment with other engineers, scientists, and technicians within the LANL, DOE, Department of Defense (DoD), and other institutions.
You will work in a group within the Actinide Material Processing & Power (AMPP) Division in support of Pu-238 science and manufacturing for National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and their exploration programs and various Defense Programs.
The duties include, but are not limited to:
- Lead an extensive and diverse set of activities across multiple engineering disciplines, highly specialized field of research and development.
- Interface daily with different agencies, organizations, managers, and others.
- Provide technical support as a process/system engineer and assist in developing processes, identifying process improvements, and contributing to development actives within the Plutonium Facility (PF-4).
- Develop new methods, technologies, and analysis techniques for institutional programs.
- Interact with multiple organizations to ensure compliance with Conduct of Operations,
- Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Quality, and Safety Management programs.
- Serve as a contributing member of the R&D and Operations teams to address engineering challenges.
- Ensure programmatic objectives through the provision or project management and engineering support to successfully complete milestones and mentor early career staff, postdocs, and students.
- Support operations as needed to maintain equipment and ensure the operability of manufacturing processes.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Engineering Experience: Demonstrated experience performing a broad range of complex engineering, including experience designing a complete project, system, or component through work experience. Demonstrated experience in leading the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of ideas / solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
Project Development: Demonstrated experience in design; planning; and executing research and development projects. Demonstrated experience in developing innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, and approaches. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement project management plans for varying sizes of projects and defining deliverables.
Problem Solving Skills: Demonstrated ability to recognize and define technical problems, measure variables, analyze the problem, implement solutions, and control process. Demonstrated ability to apply and interpret, on a broad basis, scientific principles, techniques, methods, and tools to provide solutions.
Technical Accomplishments: Must have a strong record of technical accomplishments, e.g. process improvements including; design, testing and installation, and 3 to 5 years of technical experience within a professional work environment.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science, 2 years of job-related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.
- Knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.
- Demonstrated experience working in Pu-238 laboratories.
- Demonstrated knowledge or experience with tooling design, fabrication, and procurement.
- Knowledge of quality implementation.
- Knowledge of existing NNSA/DOE requirements related to nuclear and high hazard facility operations.
- Experience working in manufacturing environment.
- Experience with translating R&D projects into viable manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of project management and project controls.
- Experience working in gloveboxes or atmosphere-controlled boxes.
- Knowledge and familiarity with troubleshooting process equipment.
- Active DOE Q security clearance.
- Enrollment in HRP.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
