What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) High Performance Computing (HPC) Design Group is
searching for a strong contributor to help drive the future of supercomputer storage and I/O
technologies. LANL has a history of being one of the leading innovators of large scale cutting edge
storage and I/O capabilities for our supercomputers. The lab is also preparing for a recently
announced 2023 "first of its kind" system utilizing Nvidia Grace processors and GPGPU's (see
https://www.lanl.gov/discover/news-release-archive/2021/April/0412-nvidia.php ) that will provide
10x performance improvements in training giant Artificial Intelligence (AI) models with resulting

Scientist 2 ($99,200-$164,100)
To support Los Alamos National Laboratory's scientific mission, it is necessary to provide storage
system services that enable scientists to easily analyze and manage Terabytes to Petabytes of scientific
data. The HPC Design Storage Team is tasked with designing, building, and integrating the storage
systems hardware and software that enable faster and more efficient insight into extreme-scale
scientific data sets. As part of the storage design team, you will collaborate to design and implement
the next generation of storage system services for Los Alamos National Laboratory's large-scale HPC
and Machine Learning (ML) platforms. Tasks include the application of hardware-software co-design
to build scalable storage systems, leverage computational storage to build efficient data services, and
advance the frontiers of HPC storage to enable rapid insight into scientific data sets.

Scientist 3 ($119,200-$201,100)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level Additional tasks include mentoring team members on technical topics, managing the integration of developed systems into production platforms, and providing technical leadership for complex technical projects. Leadership activities may include leading collaborations with external partners, and presenting team outcomes at national and international technical conferences and workshops.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with programming language fundamental concepts, common data structures, and
  • software engineering topics, such as object-oriented programming and design patterns
  • Experience with quality-oriented software development practices including unit testing, code
  • reviews, and revision/version control systems
  • Experience with common system level programming languages, such as C, C++, and Go, and
  • popular build environments, such as Autotools and CMake
  • Experience developing system software including knowledge of system calls, network
  • programming, and/or distributed systems concepts
  • Experience maintaining and enhancing software systems deployed into production
  • Experience working as a programmer or engineer within a team environment
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Experience acting as a technical lead for small or large team software development
  • Deep technical understanding of a topic related to systems design and/or systems programming
  • Experience developing and publishing state-of-the-art systems software including designing experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of systems under important workloads, knowledge of relevant related works, technical writing, and managing publication venue deadlines
  • Experience acting as a primary investigator on competitively funded research projects
Education/Experience at Scientist 2: Position requires a Bachelor' degree in a STEM field
from an accredited college and university, and 4 years of related experience. typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Scientist 3: Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from
an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of
education and experience directly related to the position.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art distributed and parallel storage systems
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing platforms, scientific computing workloads, and/or
  • machine learning/artificial intelligence and scientific data sets
  • Experience with machine learning/artificial intelligence storage and I/O workflows
  • Experience with distributed file systems and advanced file system concepts such as metadata
  • organization, data protection strategies, and input/output semantics
  • Experience with advanced storage system concepts such as log-structured merge trees, keyvalue
  • storage organization, bloom filters, and other important storage data structures
  • Experience with relevant storage system protocols and hardware including NVMe-based storage
  • devices and computational storage devices
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos with the potential for teleworking from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Telework is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year .

Note to Applicants:

  • Job requires collaborating with a small team of experts in the development of state-of-the-art HPC storage technology. Travel to conferences and presentations to/from vendors may be required to stay abreast of advancements in the HPC storage community, and to build innovative solutions
  • Opportunities are provided to publish work on storage systems software developed as part of this position. Possibilities range from lead authorship to co-author depending on experience and interest.
  • Opportunities are provided to develop funding proposals for novel research into storage systems and related fields. This position is fully-funded and does not require self-funding via proposals.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
