What You Will Do
We are looking for candidates to join our team in Los Alamos National Laboratory's Theoretical Division (T-Division). T-Division provides a unique and engaging environment that fosters multi-disciplinary collaborations to support the laboratory's strategic basic research and national security missions. The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group within T-Division conducts research across a wide variety of topics including fusion science, space plasma, numerical analysis, computational imaging, optimization, and the modeling of critical infrastructure (gas pipelines and electrical grids). These application areas are tied together by research in novel algorithms, numerical methods, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
The Theoretical Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking creative, resourceful postdoc candidates with substantial applied math, machine learning, and computational skills. Knowledge in multilinear algebra - tensor networks, and numerical method for differential equations (PDEs) is a highly desired skill. The successful candidate will work on developing and applying novel methods and computational techniques for solving extra-large PDEs based on tensor networks. The work will be building on already existing software ( https://www.lanl.gov/collaboration/smart-tensors/ ). The research is expected to produce a series of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals and computational tools. The term of the appointment is 2 years. For general information about the application processes and the LANL fellowships refer to the LANL Graduate Research Assistant page.
T-Division employs about 300 scientists, including many postdoctoral associates and graduate students, with expertise in various facets of theoretical physics, chemistry and applied mathematics. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team that is working on projects related to strategic national-interest problems dealing with development of new machine learning methods with applications in the fields of energy, new materials, biology, and environments. Many of LANL projects address the nation's most challenging safety and security problems. Our research includes active collaborations with universities and other national laboratories. The projects also include extensive research work related to high-performance computing. The successful candidate will interact with researchers and application-oriented scientists on this team as well as in applied mathematics, computing, and physics groups. Access will be provided to state-of-the-art computing facilities within LANL.
