What You Will Do

The Science Resource Office (SRO) is seeking energetic, customer-focused and highly motivated applicants for the position of Technical Project Manager (TPM) 2. This position helps facilitate collaborations both inside and outside the Lab by overseeing, managing projects for and/or performing activities to develop and maintain the following functions:

  • Collaboration Space - A space designed for collaborative initiatives that reach across disciplines, organizations, and functions to develop innovative solutions that enable Laboratory missions. The space has a diverse range of technology including web conferencing, drop-in workstations and onsite computer accessibility.
  • Director's Colloquium - External speakers and events selected by a committee of researchers on behalf of the Lab Director that seed multi-disciplinary collaborations within and beyond the Laboratory.
  • R&D Course Management - Administration of events designed to provide R&D staff the education they need to efficiently and effectively lead and manage their R&D projects, and grow professionally.
This position requires exceptional management of multiple, simultaneous projects and activities. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with stakeholders across the Lab. This position requires initiative, professionalism, discretion, flexibility, and the ability to think strategically. The selected candidate must be an excellent problem-solver, anticipating challenges or obstacles and resolving them with minimal supervision. They must also be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment and be able to multitask and complete tasks under pressure. Further, the position requires flexibility in work schedule to accommodate essential deadlines when needed.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Project Management
Demonstrated experience leading multiple small to mid-size projects with team members that often report to other organizations. This demonstrated experience must include working with stakeholders and team members to develop and get buy-in to the project goals, and develop the project plan; motivating the team to work together to achieve the project goals; facilitating communications between the team members to help them coordinate their work; monitoring and controlling the project to ensure that the project will be delivered on schedule and at budget, and that issues are identified and handled early; reporting to and consulting with key stakeholders regularly.

Event Coordination and Assistance
Demonstrated experience setting up and executing, or providing logistical and technical support for meetings/events that includes scheduling resources; setting up rooms and AV equipment and managing online meeting systems. Knowledge of web conferencing (Webex, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.).

Data Analysis
Advanced ability to effectively gather, compile, and interpret data derived from multiple sources to produce reliable metrics, trends, and forecasts related to these collaboration functions.

Problem Solving
Advanced and demonstrated experience in identifying, researching and analyzing the source of problems and finding effective and innovative solutions that balance between satisfying the customer, maintaining healthy, productive working relationships, and adhering to accepted business practices.

Strategic Communication
Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by internal and/or external interactions, seminars, briefings, and presentations. Demonstrated effective communication with both external organizations and internal staff and management that fosters healthy, productive working relationships and accommodates multiple and/or complex points of view.

Collaboration
Demonstrated experience collaborating with others that includes communicating clearly, actively listening to others, taking responsibility for mistakes, and respecting the diversity of staff with internal and external organizations and agencies. Experience interacting with senior managers and executives. Demonstrated success exercising initiative and working to resolve complex issues in a manner that fosters institutional values, staff productivity, and customer satisfaction.

Customer Service
Exceptional customer service skills and the ability to provide clear, concise support and guidance to others in sometimes stressful situations. Ability to interact professionally with all types of personnel, including external interfaces and executive management. Demonstrated experience providing professional expertise for a busy environment, dealing with multiple customers and tasks.

Work style and tools

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize when needed.
  • Demonstrated willingness to accept flexibility in work assignments and a record of dependability and reliability as proven quality work delivered on time and within budget.
  • Excellent hands-on knowledge and experience with standard business applications, including MS Excel, MS Word, Powerpoint, Outlook Mail and Calendar, Jira, and database tools.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Project Management Institute certification is preferred for this level.


Desired Qualifications:
  • Master level work in Project Management, business management or related field or Project Management.
  • Project Management Institute (PMI) certification
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
