What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologists 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Come be part of the Pit Technologies Division as an Engineering Technologist. You will be working at the Plutonium Center of Excellence located in Northern New Mexico at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). We provide plutonium pit related products and services of superior quality and value to protect our nation and promote world stability. Pits are a key component of nuclear weapons.

This role works in a team environment within LANL's nuclear facility to manufacture product, support material movement and support glove box operations. Most of the daily work is "hands-on" glove box work in support of plutonium processing. Processes at Los Alamos National Lab are performed using detailed operating procedures and work requires extensive knowledge and expertise following Conduct of Operations, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological safety, and environmental compliance requirements.

The successful candidate for this job will use the principles and theories of engineering to solve technical problems in support of engineering for Pit Manufacturing and Surveillance in the Plutonium Modernization and Directed Stockpile Work programs at LANL. This job will support engineering/projects in the development of procedures that meet nuclear Conduct of Operations requirements. These will be complex and demanding assignments requiring initiative and independent judgment. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently; work as part of a team; and contribute to continuous process improvement to meet customer requirements.

Engineering Technologist 1 - $79,200 - 129,000

• Assist in engineering studies to formulate, determine, and evaluate design criteria for equipment.

• Contribute to the fulfillment of the Pu Sustainment and Weapons Surveillance projects and organizational objectives.

• Apply basic knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics, and science to solve routine technical problems in Pit Manufacturing and Surveillance.

• Apply knowledge of analytical and/or scientific software, computer-aided design (CAD) and CAD/CAM software within Pit Manufacturing and Surveillance.

• Make simple calculations and analyses in support of engineering.

• Prepare, review, and documents technical information.

• Adhere to engineering policies, programs, procedures, and practices such as quality assurance plans and development and production manuals.

• Assist engineers on small engineering projects.

• Support manufacturing activities with strict adherence to nuclear facility safety, security, and Conduct of Operations.

Engineering Technologist 2 - $87,200 - $142,500

• In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level

• Assist with technical research and gather data needed by engineers in plutonium fabrication and cold environments.

• Assist with integrating production and development efforts to facilitate continuous improvement activities needed in plutonium fabrication and cold development areas.

• Prepare, review, and document technical information including procedures that meet nuclear facility Conduct of Engineering and Operations requirements.

• Assist engineers and designers on small engineering projects and tooling fabrication.

• Lead manufacturing activities with strict adherence to nuclear facility safety, security, and Conduct of Operations.

• Mentor and train junior staff members in development and execution of nuclear facility manufacturing operations.

• Basic knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

Additional Job Requirements for Level 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

• Demonstrated experience working independently with general instruction and technical guidance provided from first-line management, team leader, or an R&D Engineer.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team in a multidiscipline and formal environment.

• Demonstrated experience developing operating procedures for complex, moderate-hazard processes, and the training of operators in performing these processes.

• Must have excellent oral and written communications skills.

• Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 2 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a High School Diploma.

Desired Qualifications:

• Knowledge related to:

o Pit Manufacturing Flowsheet

o Criticality Safety requirements

o Nuclear Material Control and Accountability requirements

o LANMAS/LAMCAS

• Experience with additive manufacturing.

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience working, maintaining, designing process equipment.

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with chemicals, radiation generating devices, gloveboxes, or hazardous materials.

• Fissile Material Handler Certification.

• Datasheet and database manipulation experience.

• Professional Certifications.

• Knowledge of the Pu-239 mission and the associated processes.

• Experience working with classified information and parts.

• Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar).

Work Environment: Respirator, safety shoes or protective footgear, safety glasses or eye protection.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances.See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
