JOB SUMMARY
At Houston Methodist, the Research Mathematical Statistician is responsible for for all aspects of clinical and laboratory experimental design and data analyses for multiple studies, using a unique expertise in mathematics. Activities include developing and applying artificial intelligence applications to biomedical data, statistical power and sample size determination, inferential hypothesis testing, linear and non-linear programming, algorithm development and numerical methods, machine learning and computational intelligence, data mining, creating databases in RedCap, and knowledge.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

PEOPLE - 20%
- Responsible for communicating upgrade information regarding the application of artificial intelligence, results of queries in database systems, upgraded information regarding electronic protocol management system, other biomathematical tools to investigators and staff. (EF)
- Collaborate with IT regarding system upgrades, enhancements and modifications associated to accommodate biomathematical applications and Study Manager clinical trials management system. (EF)
- Teach the application of biomathematics to students and faculty. (EF)
SERVICE - 20%
- Responsible for all aspects of clinical and laboratory experimental design and data analyses for multiple studies. (EF)
- Program and develop algorithms for numerical methods and develop workflow and data pipeline as needed for specified project. (EF)
QUALITY/SAFETY - 20%
- Responsible for routine data processing and implementation of quality control methods. (EF)
FINANCE - 10%
- Study workflows and design all opportunities to improve them. (EF)
- Collaborate in financial analysis of clinical and laboratory experimental research for multiple studies. (EF)
GROWTH/INNOVATION - 30%
- Develop and apply AI applications to data, statistical power and sample size determination, inferential hypothesis testing linear and non-linear programming, algorithm development and numerical methods, machine learning and computational intelligence, data mining and knowledge discovery in databases. (EF)
- Develop standard operating procedures. (EF)
- Responsible for creating multiple databases in RedCap. (EF)
- Collaborate with Research Technology regarding software system proposals, purchases, installations, upgrades, enhancements and modifications. (EF)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- PhD Degree in computer science, math or physics related field
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Two to Three years of biomathematical or biostatistician experience
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED
- None
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
- Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
- Skilled in computer programming and Linux.
- System administration, configuration and performance benchmarking
- Proficiency in Matlab, RedCap, Excel, Access, shell scripting, and Phyton is strongly encouraged
- Proficiency handling large data sets, and data visualization using R, and ggplot2
- Proficiency with statistics, including general linear models, monte carlo methods, multiple regression, and Bayesian statistics
- Experience applying machine learning models for image segmentation, NLP
- Proficiency with digital image processing and filter design
- Experience with high performance computing (HPC) clusters
- Familiarity with common imaging tools is a plus (Freesurfer, FSL, AFNI, SPM, Slicer, etc.).
- Database experience (MySQL, PostgreeSQL) and/or experience with neuroinformatic software (XNAT) is highly beneficial.
- XML parsing, and pipeline development in Java
- Software version tracking (GitLab)
- Preparation of academic manuscripts
- Representing Houston Methodist at academic conferences
