The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Job Description

Product Quality (PQ) in the Quality, Performance, and Improvement Department provides Supplier Oversight and Inspection Services for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP).  PQ is involved with a broad cross-section of the NNPP's production lines and interfaces with all parts of the Laboratory.  PQ is responsible for maintaining the NNL Approved Supplier List which consists of several dozen vendors with various specialties located across the country.  This position might require up to one week of travel per month. 

A PQ Engineer's duties will include but are not limited to the following.

  • Performing Supplier Audits (i.e. System, Focused, or Desktop) and/or Surveillances
  • Partner with various Technical Communities to establish upfront quality plans to mitigate risks to quality, schedule and cost.
  • Resolving Supplier Quality Deficiencies
  • Support and be the Primary QPI Point-of-Contact for various Special Projects
  • Support Principal Supplier (i.e B&W, NFS, WM) Quality Program Evaluations (QPE) and Corrective and Preventative Action (CAPA) Audits
  • Create Product Inspection Plans (NDT or Dimensional)

Perform engineering evaluations and analyses and make engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks. Cognizant areas may include planning, designing, modeling, analyzing, documenting, and testing of nuclear, mechanical, structural or electrical components, systems and equipment and facilities. Work may include chemical or materials evaluations, design reviews, operations support, safety analysis, engineering methods and software development, and analysis of supplier's procedures and systems for quality control or manufacturing surveillance.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

BS degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of nine years of relevant experience; or
MS degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of seven years of relevant experience.

 

A successful candidate should have strong communications skills (Written & verbal) and be able to independently interface with a broad range of internal and external organizations. 

A successful candidate should be familiar with or willing to learn about NDE, Welding, and Manufacturing processes. 

A successful candidate should be familiar with or willing to learn about Detrimental Material and Cleanliness Controls.

A successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to NNLs Leadership Philosophy, Values, and Behaviors.

Selected applicants will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. U.S. citizenship is required.

Preferred Skills

Previous ISO 9000 auditor training or experience with performing supplier audits and surveillances is preferred.
