Assistant Physicist - Military Veterans
at Argonne National Laboratory
The Materials Physics and Engineering (MPE) group is part of the X-ray Science Division (XSD) of the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The group operates and advances capabilities at three APS beamlines (1-ID, 6-BM and 6-ID-D) in support of a broad user community encompassing both basic and applied science, with a particular focus on materials science and engineering. The group has developed both direct-beam and diffracted-beam 3D imaging techniques using high-energy x-rays, in concert with a variety of in-situ stimuli, to provide unique information of materials and their evolution. Group members collaborate both within and outside of XSD in several areas including detector development, in-situ equipment and 'big' data analysis.
The APS is currently undergoing a massive upgrade which will transform it to a 4th generation synchrotron facility. The MPE group is heavily involved with this effort, through a major upgrade of 1-ID and new feature beamline at 20-ID, the High-Energy X-ray Microscope (HEXM). HEXM will be one of the two long beamlines at the APS, and will deliver new capabilities to 'zoom in' to materials at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions, enabling the large user community to grow and address key scientific questions.
In this context, the MPE group is seeking a candidate to develop and support science at their supported beamlines. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and implement scientific methods, advanced instrumentation, and/or data analysis algorithms aligned with MPE and XSD goals.
