What You Will Do
The Associate Laboratory Directorate for Plutonium Infrastructure (ALDPi) is seeking a highly motivated Technical Project Manager 1/2 (TPM-1/2). The successful TPM will work with internal and external stakeholders to improve our internal processes, manage technical and non-technical projects, and lead new initiatives. This challenging and exciting position requires a motivated and professional individual who is capable of quickly changing focus, acting independently, and is comfortable with a broadly defined scope of work.
This position will be filled at the Technical Project Manager 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Technical Project Manager 1 $81,700- $133,100
As a member of the ALDPI Team, you will support small and/or less-complex project(s) ensuring the planning, tracking, and execution of project plans from initiation to completion with direction and/or oversight from a more experienced teammate. Key responsibilities may include:
- Support other TPMs in effective execution of ALDPI scope, schedule, budget.
- Support the development, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of project metrics.
- Identify process improvements, then organize and lead teams to develop recommendations for improvement and lead implementation efforts.
- Support Project Manager and/or Integrated Project Team (IPT) to ensure work is executed in a safe, cost-effective, and compliant manner while meeting project performance objectives and goals.
- Participates in detail assignments (6-8 months) within project matrixed departments such as Engineering, Project Controls, Acquisition Services Management (ASM), Chief Financial Office (CFO), and Construction Management, to build experience and knowledge in the project life cycle.
- Keep project management informed of status, highlighting deviations from plans, issues and recovery actions. Anticipates potential problem areas and analyzes and recommends solutions or corrective action.
- Manage and track project tasks and provide reports on deliverables and milestone status.
- Participates in special assignments and administrative studies as assigned.
Technical Project Manager 2 $99,200 - $164,100
In addition to what was outlined at the Technical Project Manager 1, at this level the TPM-2 will manage all aspects of mid-level and moderate complexity projects of a larger scope. The successful TPM-2 will work with various organizations and managers and play a vital role in the implementation of ALDPI initiatives by tracking programmatic work progress and help report on deliverable and milestone status. This may include:
- Acting as a Subject Matter Expert on process improvement teams.
- Supporting the Cost Account Manager (CAM) and Project Manager to effectively manage the execution of assigned scope, schedule, and budget.
- Ensuring work packages realistically represent the duration and budget necessary to perform work and perform variance analysis reviews.
- Conduct walkdowns or verifies work in progress to evaluate performance against plan and provide CAM status for incorporation into P6 schedule status updates.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Project Management
- Knowledge and experience in most aspects of project management of technical or operational work, including developing project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages; managing to scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines; and documenting baseline reports and change control actions.
- Knowledge of or experience working with project management software such as Microsoft Projects, Primavera P6, or similar.
Communication
- Demonstrated ability to serve as the primary interface between customers, executing organizations, and line management for small or moderately complex projects.
- Demonstrated ability or experience in establishing technical requirements, negotiating, and defining deliverables, budgets, and schedules in accordance with project charters.
- Demonstrated ability to develop effective internal customer and stakeholder relationships; internal customer and stakeholder relationships; interacting with all levels of external and internal personnel; building consensus and resolving conflicts.
Leadership
Ability or experience leading diverse teams, overseeing, and providing leadership in planning, tracking, and executing project plans from initiation to completion, including managing budgets and project resources.
Clearance
Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance, which requires US Citizenship. Dual Citizenship permitted in very limited circumstances.
Additional Job Requirements for Technical Project Manager 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Demonstrated Experience Leadership
- Experience in providing leadership and tactical planning for mid-level and moderately complex projects.
- Working knowledge of and experience in developing project plans and detailed work breakdowns to complete project deliverables.
- Working knowledge and experience in the project management of technical and operational work including developing project plans, managing scope, budgets, and technical baselines.
- Experience in developing and nurturing relationships with customers from diverse backgrounds.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- A Project Management Institute certification is preferred for Technical Project Manager 2.
- Knowledge of Laboratory and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to obtain a Q Clearance.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
