Internal Job Number: P08815UF Description: The Department of Crop & Soil Science invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed term Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head. This position will support Dr. Valtcho D. Jeliazkov's research program and will assist with the development of a new online certificate program. The research effort includes use of plant extracts such as essential oils for the development of new products for sprout control in potato and other crops, utilization of plant chemicals as alternatives to synthetic plant hormones, growth regulators, and pesticides, and bioprospecting of promising chemicals for new drug development. The position will assist with graduate student projects as well. Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty): Requires Bachelor's degree in discipline appropriate to the field in which research is being conducted. Requirements : Bachelor of Science degree in Crop and Soil Science, Horticulture, Chemistry, or related field. Experience with field and /or controlled environment research, use of analytical techniques. Ability to keep detailed records and a high level of attention to detail. Demonstrated experience with conducting research. Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to clearly communicate scientific concepts, findings, and results for diverse audiences. This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030. Type: Most of the work will be in controlled environmental conditions such as greenhouses and other facilities. The majority of the work will be laboratory work, including taking and managing samples, preparations for analytical procedures, conducting various analyses and some field work. Occasional travel to the Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center, to Meridian in Idaho, and other locations in Oregon and out of state for sample collections and processing, and for conducting field trials. Ability to lift, carry and pull objects up to 50 pounds and, occasionally, objects weighing more. Occasional weekend work or after hours may be required. Additional Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with skills, education, and experience.
