Position Summary The Associate Director position is part of the Undergraduate Admissions Office team reporting to the Deputy Director of Admissions and focuses on helping the University meet its goals of enrolling a talented and diverse student body. This position is responsible for the recruitment, evaluation, selection, and yield of applicants and is also responsible for developing admission strategies to meet the University's international enrollment goals.
Duties include leading, managing, organizing, and staffing recruitment events and programs; providing counseling and service to students and families about the University and the college decision process; reviewing and evaluating applications to render admission decisions; and developing and maintaining relationships with school counselors and others. This position represents the University and office internally and externally.
The Associate Director has a specific emphasis on working to develop and implement strategies to support the recruitment, admission, and yield of students educated outside the United States. The Associate Director will be the expert on international student enrollment and will provide consultative support on all international territories in addition to managing their own international territory. The Associate Director will serve as an expert on international student enrollment and global migration trends and consult with Leadership team members to develop strategies for recruitment and enrollment relative to WashU's international enrollment goals, particularly understanding the need-aware nature of the enrollment process for international citizens.
This position requires significant international off-campus recruitment travel to support the University's strategic goals. The position plans, coordinates, and executes programming related to these project area(s), including on and off campus counselor engagement opportunities; provides guidance and leadership to carry out these projects; ensures projects are well implemented; and conducts analysis to evaluate project effectiveness. Additional responsibilities may include managing limited domestic recruitment or evaluation as needed, application evaluation, prospective student, parent and high school engagement; and liaising with the Office for International Students and Scholars/Office of International Student Engagement.
The Associate Director is responsible for sustaining existing initiatives and partnerships alongside initiating and fulfilling new ideas and providing supervision to staff members to implement plans and programs. The role directly supervises staff members in their work to meet University goals and is responsible for the performance of assigned staff. This position also guides and indirectly manages staff members working on projects related to the Associate Director's areas.
Strong professional judgment, initiative, flexibility, communication skills, and a collaborative mindset are required.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Project Management
- Lead, plan, and manage project or program area(s) as assigned. Develop and execute programming, processes, and procedures related to project area(s). Maintain program budget(s) based on guidelines set by department's budget leadership. Collaborate with colleagues, supervisor, and departmental leadership (as needed) to ensure project success.
- Provide support to other project area(s) and program(s) as assigned by supervisor and/or departmental leadership.
- Collaborate with Deputy Director for Recruitment to annually develop recruitment goals and targets for international territory and expand WashU's presence as a community partner to schools and CBOs across the globe.
- Build and strengthen the university's commitment to students from outside the United States by working across the unit to support the development of a comprehensive access, recruitment and yield strategy.
- Responsible for direct recruitment by visiting schools, collaborating with the visit experience team to create special visit and outreach programs, and strengthening communication with international schools.
- Partner with Assistant Director, Admissions and Aid and Student Financial Services Team to establish WashU as a trusted resource for financial aid knowledge and program partner for schools and CBOs.
- Strengthen relationships with internationals CBOs and other partners to support the access and recruitment; vet recommended new partners and make professional recommendations about other partnership possibilities.
- Serve as the lead representative in managing WashU's relationship with national college access organizations and pipeline programs, both in general recruitment and support programming and as part of MOU/official partnership agreements.
Staff Management and Supervision
- Supervise assigned staff, including providing coaching, feedback, and performance evaluation.
- Provide management and oversight for staff members' work performance, including routine work, special projects and programs, and compliance with office and University procedures.
- Directly and indirectly lead staff members to execute projects and programs related to assigned area(s).
- Collaborate with colleagues, supervisor, and departmental leadership (as needed) to provide training and management to staff broadly on topics related to projects/programs.
Recruitment Management
- Manage recruitment territory that involves travel and interactions with students, parents, and counselors at high school visits, college fairs, panels, and other college recruitment activities.
- Provide expert admissions advice to prospective students and families.
- Conduct workshops on college admissions.
- Work closely with high school counselors and professional organizations to develop strong relationships for the University.
- Excellent communication skills and knowledge about the University and admissions is critical.
- Must maintain a professional attitude at all times as a representative of the University.
Application Evaluation and Selection Process
- Review and evaluate applications and participate in, or lead, committee teams to make admissions recommendations and decisions aligned with institutional goals.
- Confidentiality and thoughtful consideration of the applicants are a must.
- Must have the ability to work independently following admissions guidelines; lead and participate in discussions and decision-making processes; keep pace with reading expectations; and meet all deadlines throughout the reading season.
Service
- Conduct information sessions about the University and Admissions for prospective students and families.
- Provide customer service by answering phone calls and emails from prospective students and parents in a timely manner.
- Interview prospective students who visit campus.
- Answer questions about the University, admissions, and St. Louis.
- Work with faculty, deans, and representatives from other departments in the University to support recruitment and enrollment efforts.
- Must be able to make mature decisions and recommendations to management.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
Job Location/Working Conditions
Position requires heavy use of the computer, including an electronic application reading system in the office and at home. The position will be located in an open office environment. As conditions merit, this position may be required to work remotely. Travel and attendance at many events on and off campus is necessary, which may include international travel. Travel expectation is 6-8 weeks per year. Must transport recruitment materials to high school visits, college fairs, and group meetings. Work outside of normal business hours is necessary throughout the year. Ability to lift/move up to 20 lbs.

Salary Range $58,400.00 - $99,700.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University.
