The preferred location for this position is Concord, NC, Charlotte, NC or Raleigh, NC; however, the hiring manager may consider other locations within the Duke Energy footprint.
Summary
This Position provides leadership and direction for the engineering design of, and development for standards and specifications used to design, construct, and maintain, Distributed Energy Resource projects within and outside Duke Energy regulated service territories. Each project is customer specific and independently contracted. The Distributed Energy Resources design & standards team will work closely with Business Development and Strategic Sales as the technical authority to develop projects that deliver customer value and generate earnings within the commercial sales competitive environment. Historically, projects have ranged from $1 to $75 million in revenue over multi-year terms. Over the 5-year business plan, the Director, Energy Services Design is expected to advance over one billion in designed capital with a goal to contract 20% and oversee project engineering through system commissioning.
This position will lead, organize and develop the engineering and standards specification workforce to effectively execute contracts to meet sales targets, support the project management teams during implementation and customer care and maintenance teams during managed service relationships. Engineering projects include commercial, industrial, institutional, and governmental facility electrical and mechanical equipment and infrastructure, backup generation, indoor and outdoor lighting, combined heat and power (CHP), central utility plant (CUP), energy efficiency, power quality, reliability, and other energy related enhancements.
This position will ensure the design, operation, and maintenance standards and specifications comply with all environmental, OSHA, state and federal regulatory requirements, and deliver reliable, safe performance to meet contractual requirements and customer expectations. Additionally, the position is responsible for developing and maintaining multi-disciplinary relationships with external design teams, as well as relationships with Power Delivery Standards group to ensure our regulated solutions integrate with the utility delivery system.
The role is customer facing and is responsible for operating under multiple regulatory and non-regulated business models across the Duke Energy territories and beyond. The role will manage managerial and variety of professional and engineering direct reports.
Responsibilities
Leads the Design team to ensure engineered projects deliver reliability & quality service.
- Manage the engineering design and implementation of all commercial, industrial, institutional and governmental facility infrastructure and energy management projects.
- Manage and develop a diverse staff of technical professionals.
- Assure technical professionals know and comply with appropriate codes and standards.
- Ensures subject matter expertise in engineering and operations are brought into the decision-making process relative to system protection and control engineering and design.
- Provide oversight and assessments to contingent workers and multiple A&E firms.
- Assigns work to ensure business development proposals are completed efficiently and effectively that lead to executed contracts that generate new revenue.
- Plan and implement appropriate levels of resourcing of the business with Duke labor, contract labor, vendor alliances, and sourcing contracts for maximum profitability and customer satisfaction.
- Initiates the development of plans to ensure objectives are achieved and improvement opportunities are addressed.
- Establishes and communicates expectations to management and professional staff.
- Provides oversight and ownership of field operations engineering functions.
- Directs technical engineering support for other Retail Programs business units.
- Oversees the operations of organization and manages its compliance with financial, legal, regulatory, and state requirements. While this primarily includes the utility jurisdictions and associated 6 states (e.g. Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, North and South Carolina), it also includes all states in the union.
- Manages project priorities within functional area to maximize profitability and customer satisfaction.
Design, Project Execution, Maintenance, and Safety Standards
- Manages the development of work processes, equipment and practices standards for design, project management, and maintenance.
- Develops oversight and compliance measures to ensure that Distributed Energy Resources team members implement practices.
- Implements metrics to monitor quality and performance results.
Financial Stewardship
- Maintains responsibility for developing engineering projects that can be delivered on budget, in scope, and on time
- Maintains metrics for accuracy of proposed costs against actual project expenditures.
- Overseas the development of contracts to ensure cost accuracy and maximum profitability, while delivering customer value.
- Incorporates upsell opportunities that deliver on the customer's energy needs.
- Champions and leads opportunities for improvements that drive efficiency, and increased profitability.
- Accountable for contract execution that delivers Business Development revenue and Distributed Energy Resources P&L objectives.
- Provides input and supports development of financial and operational plans for Distributed Energy Resources.
Manages development of employees
- Manages day-to-day performance of employees under functional area
- Provide feedback to employee on performance and develops annual performance evaluations
- Develops employee technical and business skills utilizing personal development planning tools and position team and individuals for growth opportunities and special assignments
Basic / Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Business or Engineering AND ten (10) years of required minimum related work experience
- In lieu of degree and experience listed above, High School/GED AND 15 years related experience
Desired Qualifications
- Related work experience with engineering design, large account management and/or operational background
- Masters degree in Business (MBA), Engineering, project Managment or technical program and 12+ years of work-related experience
- PMP
- Certified Energy Management
- PE License
- General Contractor
- Electrical Contractor
- Experience in Consultative Sales approach
- Experience in Commercial Business process
Working Conditions
- Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
