The Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed-term, Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
The individual in this position will play a role in directing and executing scientific research on hops and trees in the laboratory of Professor Steve Strauss (steve.strauss@oregonstate.edu). Scientific research will include transformation and gene-editing method development, and implementation of a transformation/editing pipeline, for hops and trees. The goal of this research in the laboratory is improved and environmentally accepted methods for breeding, genetic engineering, and gene editing in hops and trees.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):
Requires Bachelor's degree in discipline appropriate to the field in which research is being conducted.
Requirements :
- BS/BA in plant biotechnology or a closely related field
- Experience in sterile technique, media preparation, and plant tissue culture
- Experience in molecular biology (including gel electrophoresis, PCR methods, and plasmid construction)
- Experience using a microscope to capture images and record data
- Three years of experience with computer and online tools, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, graphic display of information, and online searches of the scientific literature
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Ability to clearly communicate scientific concepts and results to diverse audiences
- Excellent teamwork in the form of responsible, timely, and congenial cooperation and communication with project staff and principal investigators orally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming workplace environment for individuals with a range of different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and/or life experiences
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
Type:
Occasional work in greenhouses and at field sites is required.
