Technical Expert, Shaft Manager and Logistics Advisor - Military Veterans

Direct, manage, and control engineering, procurement, construction, and operation of the shaft infrastructure to include management of all the flow of men and material into the Underground (UG) Expansion Mines.  Assist with UG Logistics when required to continue uninterrupted flow of required materials including materials outside of UG Logistics scope. The Technical Expert role requires not only technical expertise, but also the ability to transfer knowledge to others within the organization in a multicultural environment. This position involves gaining a comprehensive understanding of the Indonesian and Papuan culture, as well as building relationships, solving problems creatively as a team, and effectively communicating in different styles. The Technical Expert must also have a continuous learning mindset, be patient, adaptable, and able to work in an environment where work and personal life mix. Additionally, a strong sense of collaboration, mentoring, coaching, questioning, and influencing skills are essential for success in this role.

Additional Responsibilities:

1.            Direct, communicate and control the company’s safety, health and environmental policies and procedures implementation, including conducting safety meetings to promote in subordinates the awareness of safety and environmental issues especially when working in an underground environment where high risks and limited space exists.

2.            Interact with and ensure consistent and clear communication between PTFI and contractor personnel to ensure that there is clear understanding on the awareness of the importance of safety, engineering design considerations and the effect of cost control and project management.

3.            Oversee and control of the underground shaft operation keeping that operation up to ISO standards and above. Oversee all audits of said shaft including internal, external, and GOI to keep the shaft within the operational permit requirements.

4.            Manage and control communications or information flow between upper-level and lower-level personnel to prevent misunderstanding in communication that would have impact on the shaft operations and permitting.

5.            Develop operating procedures to manage the shaft and the flow of men and material through the shaft.

6.            Establish and maintain business relationships with major internal departments, including: UG Engineering, UG Maintenance, Mill-Oreflow, UG Construction and the mine all contractors. Establish and maintain business relationships with major external departments, including Safety, Material Management, Security, RUC, Orica, and PT Redpath Indonesia. This will help to maintain a good safety record, achieve targets, optimize the time and talents of personnel, and monitor the potential for civil disturbance in project areas, as well as other project support requirements.

7.            Monitor site logistics and assist with procuring materials that are being missed by the UG logistics teams or outside their scope.

8.            Develop and implement training and development programs to improve employee’s skill levels to increase the number of national employees in management and professional positions, skill flexibility, counterpart programs, and accountability for roles and responsibilities.

Qualifications

•             Mining Engineer qualification, or equivalent certification, with a minimum of fifteen (15) years of proven experience, especially in underground mining operations, to be able to understand and control the combined project management process of developing new mines and controlling project costs and overall safety.

•             Experience in working on a similar scale and complex underground mine as the one in PTFI.

•             Experience in managing materials in an underground mine.

•             Experience in dealing with multiple contractors, blasting, slope stabilization and developing new products and methods.

•             Experience in developing a logistical team that will deliver all the men/women and materials underground.

•             Concern for Safety and Environment – An underlying drive to create a safe working environment and prevention of accidents in the surrounding environment.

•             Be technically sound in area of expertise and have desire and ability to transfer that knowledge to Indonesian nationals.

•             Support and assist in the advancement of the assigned counterpart as well as other national employees, potentially including creating and managing developmental plans.

•             Build a basic Indonesian language competency including knowing basic greetings, questions, and work-related terms.

•             Adept at communicating using different styles according to the culture and context.

•             Ability to check for understanding for oneself and for the other individual by using questioning skills within the context of transferring knowledge and skills.

•             Establish trust and respect through the building of relationships over time.

•             Ability to influence through relationships, as positional authority is limited.

•             Understand and apply the coaching and mentoring process in the work environment.

•             Value and apply hands-on approach to learning and training.

•             Ability to understand different systems and assist in improving efficiency.
