Job Summary and Qualifications
The HCA Healthcare Transfer Center Paramedicis responsible forcoordinating air and ground emergent, and non-emergent ambulance transports to and from HCA facilities (including transports from Free Standing Emergency Departments to the main campus). Upon discretion of the department Manager/ shift Supervisor, the HCA Healthcare Transfer Center Paramedic may be expected to support the coordination of direct admissions and hospital transfers to and from HCA Healthcare facilities.In addition, the HCA Transfer Center Paramedic may serve in thecapacityas clinical command center throughput expediter, collaborating with facility clinical teams to address barriers to discharge.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Manage patient care in fast paced, customer-centric, technology driven Transfer Center.
- Process and document patient information utilizing internal set protocols, nurse triage referrals and coordinate acceptance with facilities that have capability and capacity
- Assess and facilitate transport of medical and behavioral health patients in accordance with the patient plan of care
- Communicate effectively with the EMS and RN team members, hospital staff and other key stakeholders involved in the transport of the patient
- Facilitate tele-health consults, including emergent and time-sensitive tele-stroke consults.
- Obtain prior authorizations for patients requiring medical &/or behavioral health transports.
- Obtain prior authorizations for post-acute placement of patients following discharge from an HCA Healthcare facility.
- Demonstrate knowledge, skills and principles of the emergency care
- Ensures physician orders are carried out accurately while arranging for transport within scope of practice
- Establish and maintain a high degree of awareness and knowledge of hospitals’ medical staff, services and special programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Possess a strong understanding of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), particularly as it pertains to transfers.
- Knowledge of all state/federal regulatory requirements pertaining to ambulance transports (including, but not limited to the Anti-Kickback Statute).
- Demonstrate proficiency in appropriately escalating any and all regulatory concerns to the Transfer Center leadership team in real-time.
- The HCA Healthcare Transfer Center Paramedic must obtain a strong understanding of the appropriate modes of transport in all cases based upon the specific clinical needs of the patient as described by the hospital clinical teams.
- Possess detailed knowledge of the capabilities of each of the transport options available (including specific capabilities of both air and ground ambulances).
- Coordinate with all ambulance transport vendors to triage the transport requests based on the time-sensitivity of patient needs as coordinating with all ground ambulance and wheelchair transport services to prioritize discharge transport requests based on the capacity and throughput challenges at the facilities.
- Demonstrate the ability to efficiently analyze information of a complex nature and prioritize multiple tasks – this is of particular importance when coordinating an emergent transport, or a time sensitive transfer.

Professional:
- Demonstrate adherence to the HCA Healthcare Code of Conduct as well as the organization’s Mission and Value Statement
- Work in a patient-centric transfer and transport call center; efficiently respond to all callers with the aid of the electronic database of HCA Transfer Center tools (including, but not limited to; facility service line grids, Central Logic, Teletracking, and telephony tools).
- Follow the appropriate protocols, algorithms, policies and procedures for all transfer and transport cases.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently under pressure to ensure the efficient transfer and transport of patients.
Communication:
- The HCA Healthcare Transfer Center Paramedic must model exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with all Transfer Center stakeholders (including, but not limited to; physicians, facility and division leaders, nurses, case managers and ambulance company personnel). All Transfer Center employees are required to demonstrate exceptional customer service through their telephone and personal contact with all stakeholders as well as possess the ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
Teamwork:
- The HCA Healthcare Transfer Center Paramedic will be required to work collaboratively with multiple clinical and administrative team members to ensure optimal and efficient care of the patients being transferred and/or transported
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited EMT-Paramedic training program – required
- Current EMT-Paramedic licensure to practice in the state where the Transfer Center is located – required
Preferred:
- A minimum of one-year of continuous experience on an Advanced Life Support ground ambulance as an EMT-Paramedic.
- Current National Registry licensure for EMT-Paramedic (NREMT-P)
- Critical Care Paramedic Certification
- Associated Degree in Applied Sciences
