DESCRIPTION
Michael Baker International is seeking a Highway Department Manager to join the team our Minneapolis, MN Office team with a hybrid (home/office) work situation available for this position. The successful candidate will be responsible for expanding Michael Baker International's role within Minnesota, surrounding states, and the Great Lakes Region while supporting our project teams and client base that we service on a national and international basis. As part of the Great Lakes Region, the opportunity also exists for the successful candidate to facilitate project workshare and best practices across all offices within Michael Baker. Typically, our projects involve supporting our clients within the Transportation market sector. This is a unique opportunity to develop and grow the practice within a thriving office and to oversee all aspects of a full-service highway design business.
Primary responsibilities include business development, client management, operational oversight, staff development, and leadership:
- Management of business development activities within the department, including capture planning, go/no go decisions, strategy and messaging for targeted pursuits, client outreach and marketing, teaming arrangements, proposal development and review, and interview preparation and delivery.
- Lead strategic pursuits and QA technical and cost proposals.
- Oversight of projects undertaken by the department, including adherence to project scope, schedule, budget, quality control/quality assurance, and staff utilization.
- Serve as Project Manager and / or Technical Manager for multiple projects; Provide technical oversight and guidance for engineering solutions.
- Execution of personnel management duties, including hiring, training, timekeeping, performance assessment, career development, and retention.
- Conduct operational meetings with staff to review and evaluate workload, resource planning, project performance, and business development opportunities.
- Lead team at every opportunity to articulate your vision and establish your personal standards for professionalism, teamwork, quality, and technical excellence.
- Interview and hire new staff to fulfill current project needs while also planning for the future of the business.
- Mentor engineering personnel in their technical and management competencies to help them achieve their career objectives.
- Ensure the team is well utilized. Coordinate with other teams in the region for workshare as needed.
- Meet with existing clients to identify upcoming opportunities and confirm performance on existing contracts.
- Responsible for winning work, increasing backlog, and growing/expanding the business.
- Visit project sites to ensure our services are being performed to a high standard.
- Ensure QA/QC procedures are being implemented on all department projects.
- Accompany other Practice Leaders at client meetings to further develop business with existing clients.
- Monitor and implement strategies to fulfill business performance objectives.
- Develop new client relationships.
- Identify training opportunities for staff consistent with their career objectives.
- Provide honest, prompt, and constructive feedback to personnel.
- Attend and participate in industry events.
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
- 10-20 years of highway design experience
- Minnesota P.E. license.
- Strong leader and business builder that wants to be empowered to develop this great opportunity

- Knowledge of local, regional, and national highway design initiatives
- Proven supervisory skills
- Experience working in and managing a diverse staff

The approximate compensation range for this position is $125,650 to $217,682. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
