Teaching Specialist: Career Services Department - Military Veterans

Position Overview

The Department of Career Services in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota occasionally needs Teaching Specialists to teach courses that cannot be staffed by regular faculty or graduate students. Openings of this kind sometimes occur for teaching evening and summer session, as well as day courses and courses offered through Independent and Distance Learning. The courses are primarily introductory or survey courses. These positions are temporary and part-time. This does not constitute a posting for vacancies but establishes a pool of applicants should openings occur during the 2023/24 academic year. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis through the academic year. Teaching specialists will be expected to teach undergraduate or graduate students in assigned course(s), hold office hours to assist and advise students, and participate in relevant departmental meetings.

Career Services in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota is accepting applications for part-time Instructional positions to teach courses that cannot be staffed by regular staff for openings that may occur in Fall 2023 (August 2023 - December 2023); and/or Spring 2024 (January 2024 - May 2024). Teaching may be for online or in-person courses. This does not constitute a posting for vacancies but establishes a pool of applicants should openings occur during the 2023/24 academic year. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis through the academic year and supervised by the Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator in CLA Career Services.

Job Responsibilities

  • Teach 1-3 sections of the CLA career courses per semester (number of sections is negotiable)
  • Prepare for and teach courses using Canvas and Google Suite
  • Hold office hours on campus or virtually
  • Grade assignments and turn grades in on time
  • Attend and participate in regular instructor meetings and trainings
  • Work as a team with other instructors to maintain consistency
  • Support employer events for courses, based on need
  • Receive official e-mails and respond in a timely manner
  • Continue personal growth within the career development profession, keep current with the field and instructional technology, and broaden knowledge and expertise


Required Qualifications
  • MA in Student Affairs in Higher Education or a closely related field
  • A minimum of one-year college teaching experience
  • Broad familiarity with career development within the liberal arts
  • Demonstrated effectiveness supporting principles of equal opportunity, diversity, equity and inclusion, including experience supporting students and staff with varying identities and backgrounds


Preferred Qualifications
  • Broad familiarity with Career Readiness in CLA
  • Proficiency with Canvas, Google Suite, and other instructional technology
  • At least one year experience working in career services in higher education
  • One year or more college teaching experience within a liberal arts setting

Salary Range
$62,400 to $83,200
